O'Keeffe's Trumpet Flower

It’s the time of year again when jimson weed flourishes along roadways and parking lots in San Diego County. I’m not the only person who is fascinated by these blossoms. Georgia O’Keeffe made several paintings of it, one of which hangs in the San Diego Museum of Art. I Photoshopped my picture for today so it looks more like a painting than a photograph. I’ve included a picture I took last week of our museum’s O’Keeffe Trumpet Flower. A toxic plant, it is also called devil’s trumpet, devil’s weed, thorn apple, moonflower, Jamestown weed, stinkwee, locoweed. Its botanical name is Datura stramonium.
