I bought this mask at Todaiji (Great Eastern Temple) in Nara a long time ago. Both the mask and the temple have special meaning for me. The Gasser and Miles families stopped there on the way to Singapore in 1969. The temple is located in Nara Park, in central Nara. The temple was built in A.D. 752. It was the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan. Now it is the Japanese headquarters of the Kegon school of Buddhism. Nara was the capital of Japan when the temple was built. Todaiji is the largest wooden structure in the world.
