DEFYING YOU KNOW WHAT

Defying you know what,
Silver Argiope hung suspended
by the slenderest thread she made herself
in exactly the right spot to catch supper.
Nobody knows how she did it.

Aunt Mildred said gravity is a lot like God.
She didn’t want to mess with the mystery.
She said Newton got more credit than he deserved,
reminding us that he didn’t actually invent it.

Aunt Mildred was something of an inventor.
She made her own catsup,
and when a dollop of it was dropped
onto a plate of her special beans...
now that was a mystery.
Nobody knows how she did it.
