So Tell Me...

Who in his right mind
could be responsible for
that one-legged man
standing somewhat on
the side of the road
begging with his head up
and his pride somewhere
between what seems to be
his one good leg and whatever
is left of the other.

a crude crutch
maybe pretending he’s on
the level and needs help
actually really certainly on
the level a veteran if we
can believe the writing on
his begging placard held up
slightly below his sad face
veteran of what I wonder

so
tell me who
is accountable,
if not accountable
then who is responsible
and what should be done?
