FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6Between rainshowers today I went down to the San Diego River near the place where it runs into the Pacific, and I watched mesemerized as California brown pelicans went about the serious business of fishing. Unlike the American white pelicans which fish cooperatively from the surface, the California brown sails along above the surface of the water until it locates a fish and then it dives and catches it. It's an amazing thing to watch. There is a pride of feral cats living among the rocks that form the jetty separating the river from entrance to Mission Bay. The cats were as interested in the show as I was.
