WESLEY, THE RED TAIL HAWK, RULES HIS PART OF THE VALLEY FROM HIS PERCH ATOP THE CROSS OF FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH.

BRIDGE

Bridge to where?
...resting halfway up the steep hillside
where proper people parade personal
piety around and under the pretty pulpit
the raptor red tail hawk sits comfortably
on the cross under buttermilk clouds...

Bridge to what?
...rising above and across the freeway
where the ticky-tacky houses witness
drive-by shootings every third Friday...
the raptor red tail hawk sits comfortably
on the cross under buttermilk clouds...

Bridge to when?
...roaming around the whole wide world
the church takes its message of hope
while people look up and wonder why
the raptor red tail hawk sits comfortably
on the cross under buttermilk clouds...

Bridge to Why?
...realizing finally that here where I am
the church moves like molasses if at all
while I wait and wait and watch and watch
the raptor red tail hawk sits comfortably
on the cross under buttermilk clouds...
