A long time ago when I lived in Singapore, one day I came across a small round ball of tropical wood that had been carved into an expression of man.  I was intrigued by it then, and on my bookshelf where it lives today, it still fascinates me.  The little carving would have caught the attention of 5th Century BCE Greek philosopher Protagoras who famously said, "Man is the measure of all things."
