Prerequisites

If you have been in love
And can arrange flowers
And like to smell a baby’s head
And pick up seashells at the beach
And wish you could fly
And long for the smell of damp earth in a dry season,
You can write poetry.
If you haven’t and don’t and can’t, you can’t.

Does Flying a Hang Glider Count?

training for over a year on a safe hill in Santa Barbara with an instructor
and finally heading to the mountains with friends ready to launch
from a 4,000 ft. mountain to land in a cow pasture

only to discover that the wind was the wrong direction and it was not safe to launch
and breathe a sigh of relief

and then try again three more times with no launch
and finally on the fifth time we had run out of excuses and procrastination
and all launched

far from being relaxed gripping the glider rigid with fear and determination
the instructor tells me to relax and trust that the glider will hold me
and that I am slowly drifting to the left and to turn right

and suddenly I notice a red tail hawk flying with me just below
the hawk whose kin flew on the training hill and then I knew I was truly flying

does this count?
