Click on an image to see it larger. You probably know the story of Robert E. Lee's mansion. As the Civil War was coming to a close, the area around his house was turned into a cemetery as punishment for his having chosen the wrong side in the fight.
Washington Cathedral rises above the District behind Georgetown.
Below are the Kennedy Center and the Watergate Building.
Memorial Bridge crossing the Potomac River between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington Cemetery offers some of the best views in Washington... The sculptures may not be high art, but they are worth a close look. The statue of Lincoln in the memorial is perhaps the best known and best loved sculpture in America. How can the Lincoln Memorial not be everybody's favorite.
The World War II Memorial was added after the more famous Vietnam Memorial. It is in a great spot between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.
The Jefferson Memorial on the far side of the Tidal Basin in the direction of National (I don't like to call it Reagan) Airport. That's not a giant bird above Jefferson in the photograph... a plane taking off from the airport.
Front and back of the Treasury Building.
The White HouseYou recognize this, of course, as the back of the White House. The porch was added in Truman's administration.
This lady, or someone just like her, has been sitting at the edge of the street across from the White House for as long as I can remember.
I'm not sure, but I think this may be Stonewall Jackson. The sculpture is in the park across the Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House.
The Metro entrance at Dupont Circle has one of the longest escalator ride in the world. The metro stations in Washington are not as ornate as the ones in Moscow, but they are very impressive... worth waiting for.

Finally!! Someone not from D.C. agrees with me about our airport's name. I, too refuse to call it by the former president's name. It's Washington National Airport!! It's not only because he fired all the traffic controllers when they went on strike years ago, but also because too many things are named in his honor already. Enough, already!!
