SATURDAY, APRIL 11This fellow (I think it’s male because I learned on the Internet that females usually have swollen abdomens) died an inglorious death in our house. I found it dead on the window sill this morning and couldn’t resist trying to find out what it is. The people who know what they’re talking about call it a crane fly. It has a bunch of common names: mosquito hawk, mosquito eater (or skeeter eater), gallinipper, gollywhopper, Texas mosquito, and jimmy spinner. Despite their common names, adult crane flies don’t prey on mosquitoes as adults, nor do they bite humans. In the “more information than I needed to know (or you need to know) department” but I’ll include it anyway, some larval crane flies may on occasion feed on mosquito larvae.
