WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3TURNED LOOSE ON THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT
Margaret and I made it home again today after spending the past month driving from West Coast to East Coast and back again, and the word that best fits this magnificent land is diversity. We stayed in Flagstaff, Arizona, last night under a mountain dusted with fresh snow. The temperature this morning was twenty-four degrees fahrenheit. Later we needed the car's air conditioning as we drove through the desert near Phoenix. In one day we went from cold to hot to San Diego's perfect seventy-two degrees. Three days ago we were driving through a snow storm near St. Louis.
