HIGH SURF

I went down to the sea today
to look at the high surf everybody talks about.
They are right… the sea looks bigger
and angrier and obviously rougher…
noone is swimming or surfing.
People stand subdued at the power
of water and wind… They hold up iPhones
to try to capture an image they can send home…
a picture that proves they were there by the roaring sea.
This is power too great for even sea birds
to challenge, so they sit and wait for calmer times.

FOG

San Diego doesn’t get many foggy days,
so when it happens, step back and look
at what changes happen when a fine mist
surrounds everyone and everything…
In other parts of the world fog sometimes
comes onto the land from the sea and hangs
around almost all day.  San Diego has what
is commonly known as the best weather in the U.S.A.,
so when the fog comes it disappears too quickly,
we don’t get to see the world through a fine mist
the way people in San Francisco get to see it.

Looking back through the journal...
I found some lines I wrote
in 1992

BIG BANG

The newspaper came today bearing news
about the oldest structures in the universe,
the word universe isn’t capitalized
but Live Oak, California, population twenty-seven hundred, is…
anyway, these immense whispy clouds rippling across time and space,fifty-nine billion trillion miles, give or take a few trillion,
are leftovers from the beginning of time
which is thought to have been fifteen billion years ago
when, as the writers of the news article
in the year of Our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-two
said something went BANG in the universe,
not little bang but big BANG,
out of what or because of what they didn’t say
because all they really know for sure
is that we are here on this green world of life and death
looking out among the galaxies and stars
amazed.

Looking through the notebook of poems
from 1991, I came across this one...
I don't remember whom I had in mind
when I wrote it.

DICK AND JANE

“What about Dick and Jane?” he asked
and waited to hear what I knew
Do they love each other still, or what?”
And he sat back as a friend will do
and waited for answer to his question
knowing I’d say something
he could use for answer, anyway.

“Well, they still live in the same house,” I said,
If that"s what you mean,” and stopped.
“I saw him running yesterday, charging
hell bent for leather down the road
as if to stay ahead of something.
He seems healthy enough.
He wasn’t smiling
if you’re trying to know if he’s happy,
but then have you ever known anyone
to run and smile at the same time?”

“You know what I mean,” he said.
“Are they going to make it as a family?
The kids are almost grown now.
There’ll be just the two of them in another year.
Will there be enough left to keep them together
When the kids are gone?”

“Does he love her, do you think?” I asked.
“Does he miss her when she’s away
the way a man should long for the sight
of someone he loves?
Does he wish she would go away
and never complicate his life
with questions and demands and expectations?
It seems to me his eyes are empty
when he looks up after she has entered the room,
and shouldn’t it be the other way around?
Shouldn’t they seems empty when she leaves the room?”

“And what about her feelings for him?” he said.
“She expected to be sustained by his love into old age,
and there she is at forty-five
without prospects for companionship
if he doesn’t provide it for her.
I think she drinks a little.
Is it to forget for not to remember?

“You know she drinks more than a little,” I said.
“She has always liked to smoke and drink,
and he hates it… even beer he really doesn’t like.
And she nurses a drink for several minutes
then downs it and goes for another.
I think she drinks to forget
that he no longer seems to care
if she is lonely or happy or well or not.”

And he looked at me and said
with finality of a eulogist,
“The end has come for them.
The woman he married no longer lives
to greet him when he comes into the house
and the man he was has died, too;
So they are just two strangers living together
trying to figure out why.”

Our Friend Phyllis Friedricks died this afternoon.  She was one hundred and one years old. Amazing woman.  Amazing friend.  She suffered a stroke yesterday afternoon.

When I got back home from a bike ride, I learned that Phyllis had died.  Then I turned on the T.V. and heard that Donald Trump has called for a ban on all Muslim travel to the U.S.  Wow! That, too, is amazing.  Many Americans are withdrawing into themselves in fear because they have identified in their thinking that Muslims are America's enemies. They are wrong.  They don't know what it means to be Muslim or Christian or Jewish or Buddhist or, or or.   This is a strange time for all kinds of reasons.  Thank Goodness we have eleven months until we actually elect another person to be president of this country.  There will be enough time for the Trump effect to implode.

While I was out on my bike, I came across a single shoe again… this time it was on Friars Road…  Amazing and fitting.

SUNDAY… Outside the gym this afternoon a red motorcycle caught my attention.  I wondered what I would say if the guy who owns the motorcycle came out of the gym and caught me getting the pictures.  Later on the drive home, I saw a blimp flying over Qualcomm Stadium… couldn’t read what was written on the side of the blimp until I got it home and downloaded to the computer.  Now I guess I’ll go see the Peanuts movie.

THIS MORNING… Margaret and I went up the hill (Ulric Road) to the Linda Vista Presbyterian Church as guests of Steve Awe for a Christmas Fair.  A Ladies Chorus was the featured entertainment, and good breakfast food was given to guests… Christmas is a good time of the year.

JIM’S SHOES… I’ve always been fascinated by shoes, other people’s shoes.  My neighbor, Jim Fudge, has completed a memoir which will be posted online for anybody to read… anybody who wants to know first hand about Jim’s life, especially his involvement in the Normandy Invasion.  I’ll post the on-line address of the memoir when I’ve got Jim’s permission to list it in this space.  At age 90, Jim has put lots of miles on several pairs of shoes.

…Then In the Evening… The San Diego Symphony played Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor with Karen Gomyo, violin soloist, and Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring).  Guest Conductor was  Mirga Gazinyte-Tyla...  Wow!

ON MY WAY BACK TO THE CAR from my volunteer stint at MOPA I pretended I was from out of town and took pictures. I wondered if “people back home” could find the small sparrow in the first picture…  It flew down and settled on the root of a familiar Australian Tea Tree…tolerating me as I moved closer to it.  The second picture is a gnarly Pepper Tree that I’ve photographed other times.   The corridors of the main cluster of buildings in the center of the park are never the same from picture to picture, even if only the shadows are different.  I like the rustic bases of the light poles on Laurel Street Bridge. Someday I will be passing by after they have been freshly painted and photograph one of them and it will seem new.  The lawn bowling people seem always to be the same... classic. The Christmas tree at the Old Globe Theatre advertising The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is different from year to year…and the face on the Eucalyptus Tree closer to the place where I left the car seems different today.  I’m wondering if I’ll even notice it next week when I pass by the same place.

WHO YA GONNA BELIEVE

Who ya gonna believe
with the T.V.
throwing images and promises
candidates
straining to look honest
and talk
and talk
and talk
at the same time
about their schemes
and guaranteeing
yes, sir,
I said guaranteeing
the good life
without raising taxes.

WAR IS A SPECIAL KIND OF POETRY

Whomp  Whomp  whomp  whomp  whomp
the metal bird hovers above the maelstrom
dust dirt debris and blood
racing and spilling
from high school football to this in one short surreal year
with no time to learn to tell what is real
and what is dream or nightmare
a hard-on is a hardon
war is a special kind of poetry
free verse I guess
an art whose medium is blood
whomp whomp whomp whomp whomp
