St. Mary’s Church was built in 1816, and the original church remains today.  It’s the oldest church still in use in Rockville. It was the first brick Catholic Church in Montgomery County. There is a new Sanctuary built close by the old one, but at times when I have been there, the old church always has people in it and the new sanctuary is often empty.  I make a habit of visiting the grave of F. Scott Fitzgerald when I am in Rockville, and it’s always fun to see what people have left on the grave. There are always writing instruments, pencils and pens.  Today there were flowers and a pair of reading glasses.  There were coins, mostly pennies, and a chain. There were a small pumpkin and a few tea candles alongside a carrying pouch.  I am always impressed with the quote from The Great Gatsby, “So we beat on boats against the current borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
