VILLEFRANCHE-SUR-MER is the picture-perfect Riviera village. The harbor town with its steep, narrow winding streets hugs the coast between Nice and Monte Carlo. One of the streets, Rue Obscure, is an actual tunnel running under buildings that date back to medieval times. There isn't much to do here except walk, look, and stop occasionally for something to drink.
My friend John Baker told me once many years ago, perhaps because he thought it might be information that would come in handy sometime, that some church doors were painted red as a sign that a refugee or fugitive could go there for sanctuary. Whenever I see a red church door like this one at St-Michel church in Villefranche-sur-mer, I think of John. A long time ago we were both in trouble occasionally in a community where there were people looking for communists behind every bush.
