I FINALLY GOT IT... a decent picture of the spectacular cup of gold vine. Dozens of times I’ve tried to get a satisfying picture of this plant that threatens to overwhelm the San Diego Camera Club Headquarters near the Spanish Village in Balboa park. The flowers, between six and eight inches across, shrivel quickly after opening fully; so each blossom always seems to be just past its peak or not yet ready to open. Of the forty or so blossoms today, at least five were just right. Maybe it’s the unusually cool weather this week in San Diego that’s preserving the blossoms. This plant that’s native to Southern Mexico and Northern South America is known in Spanish as la planta de la cáliz, The Chalice Vine... It’s easy to see why.
