Still smarting from the shameless, soulless response yesterday of a bunch of Murietta residents to children and teenagers being processed by the Border Patrol, I felt a great need to go down with Son David to San Diego’s new main library for an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson. The program was sponsored by Alliance San Diego.

All around the San Diego Library are signs that we still have a lot of work to do to fulfill the promise of the Civil Rights Act.

Humanitarian Crises in the world now:

Syrian refugees… about 2.5 million people have fled to neighboring countries.

Typhoon recovery in the Philippines… 14 million people still dealing with the effects of Typhoon Haiyan.

South Sudan conflict where thousands have died and another million people have been displaced.  Malnutrition threatens 1.25 milliion children.

Central African Republic fighting mostly over religion… thousands killed and 700,000 people displaced.

Democratic Republic of Congo… 2.9 million people displaced… 6.7 million people need assistance now.

Mali, religious conflicts… 3 million people likely to run out of food this year.

Iraq… continuing religious/political conflicts spreading ISIS caliphate project to all of the Middle East.

Israel and Palestine renewed fighting… pledging to fight to the death.

America’s southern border region has been inundated with almost 50,000 child migrants in past eight months.

In Murietta, California, Mrs. X is having trouble deciding how often to change her cat’s toilet box; Mr. Y has misplaced his favorite piece of luggage, the one he always takes on his trips to Vegas; Ms. Z is having a hard time deciding where in Costa Rica or maybe Cancun to go for her vacation in August. Good news for Representative Darrell Issa who has decided not to worry about getting reelected because he has been reassured this week of the extremely high level of ignorance, stupidity, and selfishness of voting citizens in his district.
