IN PRAISE OF STRANGE BEAUTY

Erythrina...  I don’t know what kind of erythrina this tree is, but I know it is one.  It’s blooming now in Balboa Park on the east side of Park Boulevard near the cactus garden.  On the other side of the park some erythrinas are red; I’ve found a picture in a book that identifies those as African coral trees. The cluster of blossoms in the first picture is about six inches across.

Click on a picture to see it larger.

As I was scrolling down and got to the third photo, my reaction was, "Oh Wow."
I have never seen anything like that before.
Balboa Park sure has some beautiful scenery.

from Anchorage... Thank you for sending some of the wonderful San Diego weather our way. It must be glorious to live where flowers bloom all year long. However, it's even more glorious to have someone who sees where they live with such an incrediblly open mind and heart. Life here is still buried in snow, but it is awesome. I love it. Dogs are running, bears are waking up, and break up has arrived a lot earlier than ever, but still the mountain peaks are covered in winter, as is our yard. I can hear the bulbs beginning to "turn on" and I can't wait...until summer...when Judy's garden explodes with vibrant color. I wish you lived nearer, you'd like this place. Plan a visit!!!! Peace, Bob

If mine and Gareth's marriage were a nation, the African coral tree would be our official tree.
