We climbed by bus up from Ruse on the River through the Bulgarian farmland to Arbanasi and Veliko Tarnovo...  Amazing country.  The fact that the Communist system couldn't make this beautiful, productive country work for the people means the Communist system won't work anywhere.  More than two decades after the breakup of the Communist government and Bulgaria's separation from the old Soviet Union (which was breaking up at the same time), this country is still struggling to find its way to prosperity for its citizens.  We go on to the Black Sea tomorrow.  I've never been there, so I am eager.

Margaret wandering through a market street in Veliko Tarnovo.

In Arbanassi... in a house that once was the home of an Ottoman Turk family... I wandered into a room with a mirror and took a picture of myself.
