MEMORIAL DAY

Honoring the military in church
bothers the hell out of me
implying God loves us
more than any
others

I have always known it is wrong
killing anything for pleasure
or even for need
if the need is not great
insistent

A boy I knew once killed tadpoles
catching a bucketful of them
and smashing them
carefully on a rock
with a hammer

Jerral,

I would suggest honoring our military for their service to safeguard our freedom of religion, as well as all the others, is appropriate .  Without our military, we could well become overrun by Islamist extremists who would destroy our religious freedoms.  Afterall, that is the goal of the zealots toward all us "infidels".

We also have many congregation members who serve in the military to protect us all and our American way of life.  I thank God for our military troops every night, and ask Him to guide and protect them, and to help them perform good works over seas without having to pay for it with their lives and bodies.

Granted, the actions in war are often political in purpose, but national security is the main purpose, and that is what we honor anywhere we celebrate our military.

God Bless Them!

Have a good week!

Ron,
I, too, value all of the liberties and freedoms that our great country provides.  I appreciate your passion...  Thanks for writing to me.  My point in the poem is not to denigrate individuals in the military nor to approve or encourage extremism in any of the world's cultures (including our own) that leaves us believing we have no alternatives but war.  My personal sense of Jesus' and the Buddha's message is that we must continue to try to find those alternatives rather than to celebrate war.
