THE ANNUAL PRIDE PARADE gives San Diego some of the year's best theater. The firemen who protested last year that they were harassed by the participants in the parade are as unbelievably silly as the five or six men who carry signs each year declaring God's displeasure with everything the parade represents. We are reminded by both the detractors and the celebrants that America is a good country. The event is actually a great community party that brings thousands out to celebrate our great democracy.THE PRIDE PARADE IS ONE OF THE BEST REASSURANCES THAT THE WORLD IS CHANGING. Area universities were well represented. SDSU made a good showing. My friend, Phil Bowles, professor of English at Point Loma University, demonstrates that "all means all" by coordinating the work of the volunteers who keep the event clean.

The guy waving a Bible and wearing a "NO PARKING IN THE REAR" sign is bellowing that God hates homosexuals. The two guys obviously wanted to demonstrate that they aren't convinced. One of the fellows in the ACLU group where I was walking shouted to the guys with the hateful signs, "God loves you anyway." ...This is a great country!
