THE RETIRED LIGHTHOUSE

The noble, iconic, unmistakable tower
of the retired lighthouse...is aloof, untiring,
a constant reminder on its lonely hill,
that the world will always need beacons...
signals of hope for safe harbor.

Set back a little from the edge of the bluff,
the lighthouse rises from the coastal scrub.
In dazzling sunlight or in fog the white pillar
stands alert above its small, humble cottage...
A blind sentinel, an extinguished torch.
